A Great Start

Dear FlyLady,

I am barely getting my wings going here, but I shined my sink! I have a double stainless sink, and for years the left side has been used for scraps destined for the compost pile.  The scraps go in various plastic bags that food has come in, such as a potato chip bag, or a cereal box liner.  Sometimes the bags leak and that left sink could get pretty grungy.  Well, not only did I shine the RIGHT side of the sink, but I cleaned up the LEFT side and left only one clean and covered yogurt container for the scraps.  The counter was a lot clearer too.

A few weeks ago, my stepdaughter and granddaughter stayed overnight at short notice, due to scary severe weather approaching the area.  This was a first – in 10 years!  Pretty significant. I’m one of those “the house is too messy to entertain” folks.  Imagine how great it was to watch my Granddaughter help herself to strawberries and rinse them over the clean sinks!!!

Thanks for a great start to using your system.
Elyse, fluttering in GA

June Habit #9 Drinking Water Might Help With Sleep

Dear FlyLady,

June’s habit is Drinking Water, and that’s great news. I can confirm the experience of the woman who wrote earlier that she drinks more with a straw… I had no idea that it made such a difference! I’ve started gifting my friends reusable glass straws made by SimplyStraws (my favorite is the pale pink).

Initially I got the reusable straws to avoid staining my teeth with hot tea and wine, but I these days use them more often for water, since I actually drink it now! One thing that I learned during my training as a scientist is that the body processes general fluids in a different way than it processes pure H20. We can drink tea or flavored beverages all day long, but we still need pure water.

Earlier, “Flying in NC” wrote that she finds the water at her workplace tastes unpleasant; she’s probably onto something. Our taste-buds are sophisticated instruments! There may be a pollutant, leach from the pipes, or treatment residue that just isn’t healthy. Further, there could be a high mineral concentration that is making the water very acidic or alkaline. In matters of water, I trust my intuition.

There are lots of pollutants that we can’t see or taste, so if its bad enough that it actually tastes unpleasant, I don’t drink it. At my workplace, I have a 3-gallon bottle either made of BPA-free plastic or better: a glass jug (easily purchased from a beer-brewing store). I fill each jug with reverse osmosis filtered water (and add a very low level of trace minerals to balance what’s been taken out).

When it’s time to switch jugs, I bring the new one in atop a rolling suitcase after hours or on the weekend, then keep it stashed between my desk and the file cabinet. I pour my water from that into a covered pitcher on my desktop, and refill my pink-glass straw sippy cup throughout the day. With this system I’ve been doing for a year, I drink close to 3 gallons a week which is an incredible improvement!

As a scientist, I’ve experimented with just about everything to improve my sleep problems; better hydration has made a huge impact on that specific issue and my overall well-being.

Thanks FlyLady for encouraging us in Drinking Water!

Blessings aplenty,
Water Baby FLYing in Hawaii

Try a 2 Minute Weekly Home Blessing

Dear Friends,

Have you ever done a Weekly Home Blessing? I understand for some of you who work outside of your home or have little children, that putting together a full hour to bless your home is almost impossible, but I have a way for you to do it without stressing you out. I like to do it this way too.The last thing I want to do is add more stress to your life. We are here to reduce your stress!

First I want to look at why you don’t think you have time to do a Weekly Home Blessing Hour.

When your mother made you vacuum; you had to do it right! All the furniture had to be pulled out from the wall and vacuumed under it. Dusting was another form of torture. Everything had to be removed from the tables. Oh let’s not forget about mopping a floor. First we had to sweep it well and then we had to get down on our hands and knees to scrub the floor. If we tried to do it any other way it was not good enough.

No wonder we don’t want to bless our homes. As a child it was punishment.

Now hear this! This is your home not your mother’s and you can bless it anyway you want to. Do your morning routine first, be dressed to lace up shoes and make sure you have your breakfast. Then you spend 10 minutes just one thing at a time. If you can’t put together a full hour then do one thing each day or at the top of every hour.

Change sheets – I usually strip those off the bed as I get up. I have two sets of sheets for our bed. I allow the bed to air out till I get the rest of my morning routine done.

Empty all the trash – Grab the trash bag from the kitchen and run around the house and add the rest of the trash to it. Put it in your big garbage can.

Vacuum all rooms – This is just the middles. Do it as fast as you can. Do not obsess about the lines in the carpet.

Cull/toss old magazines – This take no time at all. Gather up all your old magazines and put them in the recycle bin or put them in the car to drop off at a Doctor’s office or Car Repair place. They never have any good magazines.

Mop kitchen and bath – This is one of our most fun jobs. Yes you heard me right. Mopping can be fun if you will let go of your mother’s perfectionism. Mopping is just putting soapy water down and getting it up off the floor. Along with it comes the dirt. There are lots of ways to do this. We have a great mop that helps with this.

Your children can have fun too by putting them in their bathing suits and letting them slip and slid on their little bottoms. Use old towels and shaving cream. They will enjoy themselves and you will get a clean floor. It may take more than 10 minutes though. LOL

Clean mirrors and doors – We have a tool for this job too. Our purple rags do the job in no time at all. Take a wet purple rag and clean off those dog paw print and children finger prints from the doors, and toothpaste splatters from the mirrors.

Dust – This is not your mother’s way of dusting. We have two great tools for this: Our feather duster and a MultiWand.

I use my feather duster to bless my home real fast. It only takes me about two minutes to feather dust my whole house. I use my MultiWand when I am doing missions in the zone we are in.

So you see Weekly Home Blessing can be an aerobic exercise or a once a day blessing. I keep my Weekly Home Blessing list on my bathroom door. I have a day of the week beside each one.

Weekly Home Blessing can be hard if you still have lots of clutter. You can’t organize clutter; you have to get it out of your house. Clutter is standing in your way of you blessing your home.

FlyLady

Tip of the Day: You can spread Weekly Home Blessing Hour over a whole week. One item each day. Here is a poster to help you.

There is More Than One Way to Shine

Dear Friends,

When you join our group, your very first assignment, was to Go Shine Your Sink. Do you remember how good it felt to see it gleam. Then after is was shining, it was more difficult to put dirty dishes in it. As a result you kept the Dishwasher empty so you could dispose of your plates and glasses. The Clean and Shiny Sink was contagious. I have another God Breeze for you from a member’s subject line!

Did you know that every room in your home has a Shiny Sink! Let’s think about this for a little while.

Master Bedroom: For me it is seeing my bed made with my decorative pillows on it and my one crowning pillow that my SHE sisters gave me! It says, “I’m Not Bossy, I just have better ideas!”

Children’s Rooms: Having the toys put away and the floor clear, is usually a good sign.

Bathrooms: Having the sink shining! That is an obvious, but the mirror clear of tooth paste splatters and dental floss home runs is another thing that makes my bathroom look nice. Also having toiletries put away and not sitting out on the counter.

Office: This is a tough one, Keep your desk clear, with an uncluttered work surface.

Dining Room: Having the dining table empty and a pretty center piece on it. Maybe even a table cloth and napkins.

Living Room: This is a hard one for me. Keeping my end tables and huge coffee table clear of papers.

What this all boils down to, is Hot Spot Prevention. We all have these areas in our home, that if we will be vigilant, they will not become cluttered with our daily stuff. So twice a day do a Hot Spot Fire Drill for two minutes. If we will stay on top of this, they will not become a raging clutter inferno.

There is one other Shiny Sink, that I’ll bet, you have not thought of.

Yourself: What are the final touches that make you feel special when you are getting dressed. It could be, putting on your makeup, fixing your hair, donning a pair of earrings, placing that string of pearls around your neck. It could also be a spritz of your favorite fragrance, the perfect color of lipstick, or using a sweet smelling bar of soap in your bath. One other more intriguing possibility could be the foundation garments that you put on that give you that special feeling all day long. Something lacy and pretty underneath jeans and a t-shirt can make a huge difference in your own attitude. Something special just for you!

What can you do each morning to make yourself feel special? Each and every one of your are special to me! My goal is that you will feel this worth for yourself. If you outsides look good, your insides feel good. If your insides feel good, you can do anything! The Sky is the limit! I want you to Shine too!

Are you ready FLY along with me!

A Little At A Time

Hello FlyLady,

I wanted to take a minute to thank you for what you do.  Your system and routines has helped me to fight my postpartum depression.  My best friend called one day, knowing I was depressed, and said that she was doing this 31 day challenge and she wanted me to do it with her.  I had just ignored my house for so long i didn’t know where to start.  Thanks for helping me to get movin on it a little at a time.  I still have a long ways to go, but I am not overwhelmed by the mess anymore!

Thanks!

I think I am supposed to say “flying in Texas” but maybe just starting to flutter would be more accurate!

June Habit #8 Misinterpreting My Thirst

  Dear FlyLady,

A few days ago, I read an email about putting rubber bands around your water bottle to help keep track of how much water you need to drink each day. I thought it was a GREAT idea! So I used my elastic hair bands the next morning around mine.

I read somewhere once that your body needs half your weight in ounces of water to stay hydrated. So I calculated and I need about 5 of my water bottles. I kept track all day and realized I had been misinterpreting my thirst signal as hunger! Well, that must be why I am over weight and don’t feel well most of the time; I am dehydrated and overeating!!!

The 2nd day tracking, I was feeling so good that I was able to run around and play outside with my kids. They were so happy to have me playing with them instead of saying I don’t feel good!

A few weeks ago, I was carrying my 3 yr old dd to our neighbor’s storm shelter across the street during a tornado. I got half way there and couldn’t breath or carry or any farther. It’s very scary to think I could loose my children to one of the next tornadoes all because I couldn’t take care of myself. I’m guessing it was because I was dehydrated and lacked the ability to run like I used too.

I plan to keep tracking my water so my energy can stay up and I can start exercising again. Hopefully next tornado, I can run across the street carrying my child the entire way!

Thank you for all the emails! I used to get frustrated with the amount, but once I started to give into the FlyLady way I enjoyed reading through all the great success stories you helped create!

Thank you so much!

18 Tips to Stop the Kitchen Explosion

Dear Friends,

Most of the time we are in a mad dash to get dinner from the car to the table; we just bypass the sink all together. We don’t even have dirty dishes because the paper plates we are using just go into the trash can along with our pride.

The guilt we feel when we feed our families the stash and dash meal planning results, not only wreaks havoc with the health of our children but that guilt causes us to feel like we are not good mothers. We want to be the perfect mother but then that perfectionism gets in the way because we don’t think we have time.

We have time, we just don’t know it yet! It all starts with that sink! This sink greets us first thing in the morning with that guilt of dirty dishes and mystery water. We can change that by going to bed with your sink shining. When you walk into your kitchen the next morning you are going to smile. That smile is just the beginning.

So how do you stop the bomb from going off in your kitchen when you do decide to cook? That bomb and the time it takes to clear the collateral damage is one of the reasons that you don’t think you have time to cook! Having a plan is half the battle. Implementing that plan as part of your basic weekly plan, before bed routine, morning routine and afternoon routine. Here is how you stop the damage before it starts.

1.  5 minute on a Wednesday write down your menus for next week.
2. 10 minutes make out a grocery list from your menus
3. 5 minutes clean out the refrigerator making grocery put away easy
4. 30 minutes to grocery shop when you have a list
5. 5 minute to put groceries away
6. 1 minute each evening move frozen food from freezer to refrigerator

7. Start the day with an empty dishwasher and an empty trash can.
8. 5 minutes to check your menu plan or start a slow cooker
9. Pick a time to start cooking; Don’t wait till meal time to start.
10. Pizza is not on the menu!

11. Walk into the kitchen, fill your sink full of hot soapy water
12. 15 minutes in the afternoon to start cooking
13.Clean up after yourself as you go

14.  Don’t multitask. This is when we burn food. FlyBabies don’t cook on high!
15.  Do not get in a hurry!
16.  Stay in the kitchen. Children’s homework is done at the table.
17.  Delegate the table being set, salad being made, and ice in glasses
and one more!
18. USE YOUR CROCK POT SO YOU DON’T BURN FOOD!

You can do this! As you dirty up a dish, spoon or pan; place it in the hot soapy water. As food starts cooking, clean as you go. When you reach into the hot water the utensils will practically be clean. Clean up is a breeze because food residue has not dried and caked on. Before you sit down to eat make sure all prep tools are washed up and drying, ingredients are put back in refrigerator and trash is in the garbage can.

After dinner all you will have to do is put away washed dishes, clear the table and put dishes in dishwater or dishwasher and do them. Make it a habit to go to bed each evening with your sink shining.

Nothing says “I love you” like that sink full of hot soapy water, your clean kitchen and that shiny sink!

Are you ready to FLY with a sink full of hot soapy water?

Suffering Alone

Dear Friends,

Our homes have always been a source of shame for us. This is why we locked ourselves behind those doors and refused to let anyone into our homes and our lives. We were fearful that someone would find out our dirty little secret. We felt that we were the only ones in the whole wide world that lived this way. I wrote Sink Reflections for you.

This book is dedicated to YOU, who have suffered in silence, thinking that you were the only one in the world who lived in CHAOS!

We no longer have to suffer with our shame. FLYing gives you the tools to deal with your home and yourself. You see you never dreamed that the state of your home was a symptom of your problem and not the problem itself. You have said it thousands of times, “If only I could get the house clean; everything would be OK.” That is not how it works. We have read every self help book ever printed because we were looking for that special tip that would be the saving grace. There is no special tip for house cleaning. It just has to be done. The problem has always been our perfectionism.

As children we were taught by our parents that if you can’t do it right don’t do it all. It was a lesson we took to heart. We were also taught by example that cleaning took a huge block of time. I don’t know many people that have hours to devote to their homes. We all have busy schedules and just want our homes to magically clean themselves.

Well that does not happen unless you have your routines firmly grounded. Even small routines will change your home. When you sandwich your new attitudes along with your routines, and toss in some love; you have the recipe for a wonderful comfort zone that you can call home.

In all those self-help books we were given tips for doing things. We all know how to clean; after all we are perfectionist; our biggest problem is moving when we have the chance. For years in our stinking thinking we cleaned for company. We didn’t have time to do a little every day, because we didn’t think it would do any good at all. We felt that we needed a whole day to clean and then we would be so proud of ourselves when we stood back and looked at what we had accomplished. That would only last a few hours because the clean would start to disintegrate around us: All because we didn’t have routines to help us keep it up.

Routines are not the strait jackets that we thought they were. With them we can be even more spontaneous than before because now we can open our doors and not hide. Before in our CHAOS; we had to have lots of notice to get ready for company. It would take day or weeks to get it together and an all night cramming session the day before the company arrived. We looked and felt awful because we were not taking care of ourselves. We were such a joy to be around! NOT!!!

Did you know that your family deserves to be treated like company and you do too? Since it has always taken so long to get ready for company then we just didn’t think we were worth it. Well we are and now you know how to do it without being overwhelmed by the process. The secret to keeping your home in this comfort zone is to pick up after yourself. I asked my clerk one time about this. I had crisis cleaned to get ready for Thanksgiving and I was afraid that it would all fall apart before Thursday and I would be up half the night to get ready for our guest. Since she is Born Organized I interviewed her about how to keep it together. She kind of chuckled at me and said it is really quite simple, Marla. All you have to do is pick up after yourself. That was a light bulb moment for me. If I get it out, I put it away. Wow it is that simple after all.

That was the day that I started to practice picking up after myself. I would be on watch for those tell-tell words, “I can do that later, I’ll just put it here for a minute till I can get back.” That was my warning sign that I was getting ready to build a hot spot. It is just amazing when one of your flat surfaces is clean; how much that piece of paper stands out, kind of like a sore thumb.

Half the battle of having a home ready for company all the time is to have your favorite dumping grounds(hot spots) clear. Your house can have dust every where and floors that need doing, but if your hot spots are extinguished, then your home looks clean because the clutter isn’t in your face. I don’t let my home get more 15 minutes worth of cluttered. We could have a party tonight if we wanted. Fling open our doors and let our friends into our lives.

Could you do this without a panic? It is so peaceful to know that your home is ready and your bathroom is presentable. I want for you what I have and this peace came from building my routines one habit at a time and changing my attitude toward my home.

Are you ready to FLY by eliminating the CHAOS in your life?

Safe and Motivated

Hello Flylady and Crew!!!

I hope everyone is still saying safe and healthy.  First of all, I would like to thank-you, Flylady, for all of your encouraging emails and videos.  My husband loves listening to you as well, and has even told a few ladies at his work about you!  He thinks (we all know) that you have a lot of common sense and talk about things that are valid to everyone.

I am writing to tell you how pleased I am with your “Body Clutter Wise Women’s Tea”. The tea is absolutely delicious!  I usually have to put some honey in my tea to sweeten it up, but the flavor of this tea is wonderful.  Very mild and aromatic (I don’t like my tea too strong).  I have also ordered some Vitamin C to put into my hot tea, just like you do-great idea!

Thank-you for helping us to keep healthy, safe and motivated during these unprecedented times.  You and your crew are fantastic and we really appreciate all that you do for us!  God’s blessings to all of you and Happy Easter!

With much love and gratitude,

Flybaby Mary from N.H.

June Habit #7 June Habit Evokes Memories of Home

Dear FlyLady,

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the e-mails, tips, essays, and testimonials from you and our world-wide family and friends. I really appreciate getting free help with my housework!

But regarding June’s habit, I would just like to say that it evokes memories of home in a simpler time. I am sure many of your readers will share these memories with me. In the 50s I was growing up and learning how to do the things that a pioneer woman would have done to keep her family fed and healthy. (We had no electricity and no oil or gas furnace but a wood/coal-burning pot-bellied iron stove). I helped my mother change diapers on my younger siblings, I fed them a bottle of water now and then to supplement her breastfeeding of them, I watched her cook (and clean up after herself when we had devoured her delicious meals, which she cooked on a wood-burning stove, by the way!). I helped my mother do “the warshin'” and gave the babies their baths.

So much of what I learned depended upon judicious use of water! You see, we had no running water and no sink. Our water was obtained by one of us walking into the woods about 1/5 of a mile with two empty 3-gallon buckets, dipping them into the pool that was fed by an underground spring, filling them to the brim and walking carefully back to the house, the last fifty to seventy-five feet being a fairly challenging uphill trek! We made several of these trips daily, until my siblings grew big and strong enough to help carry Winterlein Lard buckets of water (about three quarts worth).

All of this is to underscore the feeling of deep gratitude I get when I realize I am thirsty and that all I have to do to satisfy that thirst is walk to my kitchen sink and turn a knob and the best-tasting water in the world comes pouring out into my glass. Since we have well-water, it is always cool and refreshing. Also since it is well-water, it is delicious! Hard, yes, but delicious! It tastes just like the water I drank when I was growing up, and let me tell you, I am a water connoisseur!

I have tried many of the expensive and cheaper brands of bottled water over the years, but NONE of them have come close to water out of that springfed pool except our present well-water. I thank our Creator for it every time I quench my thirst with the most natural drink of all.

I am so thankful to my husband for the fact that, when our well failed about ten years ago, he and a savvy friend of ours used a Bloomfield jack to raise each section of the old pipe up out of its hole. They determined they would need 75 feet of new pipe, one of those pieces to have a point on the end with holes in it to strain out large stones, which they would then drive BY HAND back down into the same hole, one at a time. When they got the first one almost driven in, they screwed on the next piece and continued driving. It took them one day to raise the old pipe, and another day to drive in the new. I cried with thankfulness that we were not required to tap into that awful, chlorine-tasting, fluoridated city water!

So it is with great joy and gratitude to the Creator, my husband and our friend, and you, dear FlyLady, that I join you all in June’s habit, Drinking Water. I do have one tip for FlyBabies like me who have sensitive teeth but love cool water.

Fill the washed and rinsed 16-ounce size of empty soda bottles with good-tasting water of your choice, and keep them in the refrigerator (we have a camping refrigerator that we keep on our front porch). One of those bottles fills the 16-ounce stainless steel water bottle just right with cool water that stays refreshing until you have drank it all, even if it takes you all day to drink it. Of course, I drink mine in about two hours and refill it three more times daily.

Adding ice would make it just too cold for my sensitive teeth (and my asthma is triggered by very cold drinks as well), but fridge-temp water is perfect! Thank you again for encouraging us to partake of this life-sustaining fluid regularly!
